Bloomberg’s $10,000 Bitcoin Prediction: The On-Chain Data Says Otherwise

0xLark Trends

Bloomberg strategist Mike McGlone warns Bitcoin could crash to $10,000. Stocks are at all-time highs; Bitcoin is lagging. He calls it a “Faustian bargain.” But the on-chain data tells a different story. We followed the ETH, not the promises.

Context: The Macro View vs. The On-Chain Reality McGlone’s prediction is a macro narrative: traditional risk assets are strong, crypto is weakening, and capital flows favor equities. It’s a plausible story—until you check the blockchain. The prediction lacks any on-chain data: no realized price, no MVRV ratio, no miner cost basis. It’s a top-down view from a traditional finance desk, not a bottom-up forensic analysis of Bitcoin’s network health.

I’ve spent years auditing on-chain flows. In 2022, I modeled Terra’s liquidity shortfall before the collapse. That experience taught me that macro narratives often lag behind the real signal: what wallets are actually doing. Today, the data contradicts McGlone’s thesis.

Core: The On-Chain Evidence Chain Let’s start with realized price—the average cost basis of all Bitcoin holders. Currently, it sits around $22,000. That means the average holder bought at $22k, not $10k. To reach $10,000, Bitcoin would need to fall 55% below its cost basis—a level never sustained in the post-2020 era. The 200-week moving average, a historical bear market floor, is at $28,000 and rising. The $10,000 target is below the 200-week MA by 64%—a level that would require a black swan event, not a simple macro rotation.

Next, look at supply dynamics. Illiquid supply (wallets that rarely move coins) is at an all-time high. Long-term holders are accumulating, not distributing. The Short-Term Holder (STH) cost basis is $25,000. If price falls below that, short-term holders become underwater, but historically, that’s a buying opportunity, not a crash signal. The MVRV ratio (market value to realized value) is 1.2, indicating undervaluation. In 2022, it dropped to 0.8—still above $10,000.

Miner economics reinforces this. The average miner cost (including electricity and hardware) is around $15,000. At $10,000, most miners would be unprofitable, triggering a hash rate drop and a natural supply shock. But ETF inflows have been steady since 2024. In my analysis of ETF flows for a family office, I saw a clear pattern: institutional accumulation accelerates during dips. The $10k scenario ignores that structural demand.

Volume is noise; token velocity is the heartbeat. Spot trading volume on exchanges has declined, but that’s typical in a bear market. What matters is the velocity of coins—how often they move. On-chain velocity is low, meaning holders are sitting tight. No panic selling. The “funds flowing from crypto to stocks” narrative is not reflected in stablecoin supply. USDT and USDC market caps remain stable, not shrinking. Capital is waiting, not fleeing.

Contrarian: Correlation ≠ Causation McGlone’s argument hinges on the correlation between Bitcoin and stocks. But correlation does not mean causation. In 2020, Bitcoin and stocks both rallied on liquidity injections. In 2022, they both fell. But in 2023-2024, the correlation broke down. Bitcoin’s price action is increasingly driven by its own cycles: halving, on-chain adoption, and regulatory clarity. The stock market hitting new highs has not prevented Bitcoin from recovering above $60k earlier this year.

Every rug pull has a trail of paid gas. This prediction is not a rug pull—it’s an opinion. But it’s an opinion that overstates the impact of macro flows. The real risk is not that Bitcoin goes to $10k; it’s that investors panic-sell based on a single forecast without checking the blockchain. The data shows that the realized price floor is around $20k. The short-term holder cost basis is $25k. The 200-week MA is $28k. These are the real supports, not a round number.

Furthermore, the “Faustian bargain” label is an emotional hook. It implies that Bitcoin’s growth came at a moral cost. That’s a philosophical claim, not a financial one. As an analyst, I stick to what’s measurable: wallet balances, transaction counts, and cost basis. The measurable data does not support a $10,000 scenario.

Takeaway: The Signal for Next Week This week, focus on the 200-week moving average. As long as Bitcoin holds above $28,000, the $10,000 prediction is noise. Watch exchange inflows: if they spike, short-term holders are panicking. But the current trend is accumulation. The next signal is whether the MVRV ratio drops below 1.0. If it does, that’s a buying opportunity, not a crash.

McGlone’s view is a top-down macro story. The on-chain data tells a bottom-up story of resilience. I’ll trust the data. The blockchain remembers. You might not.
