Context: Why This Bridge Exists

Coreum Bridge is a lock-and-mint cross-chain solution connecting XRP Ledger (XRPL) to Coreum. Users deposit XRP into a bridge wallet on XRPL, and a relayer network — 28 nodes, 17 required to sign — confirms the deposit and mints wrapped XRP on Coreum. The reverse path burns the wrapped token and unlocks the original XRP. Standard multisig security. Standard lock-and-mint mechanics. But the standard assumption failed: that the relayer can distinguish a real deposit from a fake one.

On August 9, 2024, an attacker exploited this assumption. They sent 94 small XRP payments — each one with a Coreum memo — but the destination address was their own wallet, not the bridge. The relayers saw the memo, saw the transaction, and submitted proof of a 'deposit' to the Coreum Validator network. The multisig signed off. The attacker then minted wrapped XRP on Coreum and immediately redeemed it for real XRP from the bridge's reserve. Gas spike detected. Run. But the bridge kept running for 97 minutes.
